Ever heard of selenium? Sounds like one of those chemical elements, right? Well, it is.
Selenium is a very important mineral and nutrient. It is required in small amounts but it plays a paramount role in the bodily activities like metabolism. Selenium is mostly sought after because of its antioxidant property. An antioxidant prevents cell damage. 
In addition, selenium may help lower the risk of certain cancers. This is seen in its ability to prevent cell damage, boost the immune system, and also, prevent certain cancers.
One of the risk factors of heart disease is inflammation. Selenium helps to lower the markers of inflammation. Therefore, selenium may help lower heart disease by reducing the risk of inflammation.
Some food sources of selenium include poultry, beef, chicken breast, and sardines.
